With 2017 coming to a close, we’re ready to look ahead at what movies are coming in 2017 and beyond. And, judging by the slate of films we’ve compiled here, 2018 and 2019 are going to be big for sci-fi film junkies.

From alien invasions to space battles to post-apocalyptic adventures to everything else in the realm of endless possibilities, there are plenty of potentially great (and probably some not-so-great) science fiction movies on the horizon.

We tried to stay away from the sci-fi horror stuff, because that’s a rabbit hole we didn’t want to go down in this post (and it also deserves its own list in the future). But, we thought a handy sci-fi movie release calendar would be great (we were right).

So without further ado, here are the 56 best upcoming new sci-fi movies of 2018 and 2019 to look forward to:

**Updated 1/20/18: Mute now has a release date, and it’s coming to Netflix in February.

God Particle (Cloverfield)

Release Date: February 2, 2018
Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl
Director: Julius Onah

The premise of God Particle sounds a lot like Life, with a team of astronauts finding a shocking discovery aboard a space station causing them to fight for survival while their reality has changed. We’re pretty sure God Particle is going to play out more like a horror movie, though.

It was revealed that God Particle is actually going to be the third installment of the Cloverfield series. More details to come…

Annihilation

Release Date: February 23, 2018
Cast: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson
Director: Alex Garland

Jeff VanderMeer’s novel, Annihilation, will see a movie adaptation hit theaters in February 2018 from the writer and director of Ex Machina, Alex Garland. The film follows a biologist who signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition of the unknown where the laws of nature don’t apply. It’s the #1 best-selling post apocalyptic book on Amazon right now, and it’s well worth the read. The film will star Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac, and Tessa Thompson, and it’s one of our most anticipated sci-fi films of 2018 so far.

Mute

Release Date: February 23, 2018 (Netflix)
Starring: Alexander Skarsgard, Justin Theroux, Sam Rockwell, Paul Rudd
Director: Duncan Jones

One of the more interesting concepts on this list of the best upcoming sci-fi films is Mute, a sci-fi thriller from director Duncan Jones of Moon and Warcraft fame. The story is set in Berlin 40 years into the future, and it will follow a mute bartender that goes up against his city’s gangsters as he attempts to find out what happened to his missing partner. It’s being described as a science fiction Casablanca.

We don’t know much about what sort of sci-fi elements to expect, but the casting call lists names like Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd), Duck Teddington (Justin Theroux), and Sgt. Robert Klowskowski — so we can expect some interesting characters, for sure.

Ready Player One

Release Date: March 30, 2018
Starring: Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Hannah John-Kamen
Director: Steven Spielberg

One of the most exciting films on this list is Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel of the same name (one of the best sci-fi books to read). It follows the story of a virtual contest set in what’s called the OASIS, the world’s biggest MMO that has transcended from just being a game to a way of life. The film will be directed by Steven Spielberg, and we can’t wait to hear who will be starring as Wade Watts, aka Perceval the gunter. Read more…

Replicas

Release Date: June 15, 2018

Director: Tanya Wexler

Keanu Reeves is definitely seeing a resurgence in popularity following his latest string of movies, which includes 47 Ronin, John Wick (which we included on our list of the top 50 most underrated action movies of all-time), and Knock Knock. Replicas is just one of Keanu’s seven upcoming projects, and it looks to have a lot of promise. The movie will follow a scientist who becomes obsessed with bringing back his dead family members following a tragic traffic accident. The film is being directed by Tanya Wexler with a story written by Stephen Hamel (who just so happened to help produce John Wick).

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Director: Shane Black

We don’t know much about the upcoming The Predator revival, except for the fact that “you’ll never see him coming” and it’ll be directed by Shane Black. According to the official synopsis, it’ll be a direct sequel to the 1987 sci-fi film. We do know that The Predator recently added Thomas Jane into the mix, although details of his role are still unknown.

We also learned that it will have a new release date, as it has been pushed back to August.

A Men in Black spin-off movie will hit in 2019, and it’s said to expand the world of MiB in the same way that Jurassic World expanded that franchise. Before you ask, no, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren’t expected to reprise their roles. Wouldn’t be surprised to see an uncredited cameo or two, though.

Release Date: July 26, 2019
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton
Director: Tim Miller

Deadpool‘s Tim Miller will director the upcoming Terminator Reboot that will see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, as well as James Cameron. Undoubtedly, we should expect this to be a passing of the reigns to a new generation so that Hollywood can continue making Terminator movies. Still, it’s going to be a huge big budget sci-fi film for summer 2019.

Gemini Man

Release Date: October 4, 2019
Starring: Will Smith
Director: Ang Lee

I wonder if we’ll ever be sick of seeing Will Smith sci-fi flicks? In our expert opinion, probably not, and Gemini Man sounds incredibly promising. Not only will it star Smith, who will play the role of an older hitman who has to face-off against a younger clone of himself, but VFX will allow him to play the role of his younger self as well. Cool.

We don’t have any plot details for Avatar 2 yet, but it will be the sequel to 2009’s biggest movie, with James Cameron returning behind the camera. Of course, James Cameron also announced Avatars 3, 4, and , but we don’t think the series will make it that far.

The Six Billion Dollar Man

Release Date: TBA
Starring: Mark Wahlberg

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. The film will star Mark Wahlberg as Steve Austin, a military officer who becomes part of a top-secret government program after a near-fatal accident. Using cutting-edge technology, he’s turned into the world’s first truly bionic man: better, stronger, faster. It’s based on the TV series of the same name. While we’re not much a fan of Mark Wahlberg, we realize we’re in the minority, and sci-fi lovers are going to be looking forward to this movie.

The Blob

Release Date: TBA
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson

Of course, we all remember the original The Blob movie, and then the new iteration in 1988. Now, The Blob will get a third Hollywood redux. This time, hopefully, it won’t look like a ball of cherry Jello. The movie will be directed by Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider), with Samuel L. Jackson attached to star. Is it possible to make such a ridiculous concept relevant to today’s horror sci-fi audience?

Alien Sleeper Cell

Release Date: TBA
Starring: TBA

Wachowski brothers’ protege James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) is set to direct Alien Sleeper Cell, a sci-fi thriller with elements of The Bourne Identity and TV’s The Americans set in an alien invasion scenario.

Space Invaders

Release Date: TBA
Starring: TBA

We’re not so sure that a Space Invaders movie is such a good idea, especially since the game didn’t have any backstory or lore to it. And, given the failure of the most recent video game movie, Pixels, the studio might want to hold off on rushing this out. Still, it’s in the works.

Only You

Release Date: TBA
Cast: David Oyelowo
Director: Jacob Estes

A time travel thriller from Blumhouse that’s being directed by Jacob Estes, the writer of 2017’s Rings. That’s pretty much all we know at this point, but stay tuned for more.

The Black Hole

The Black Hole is a “reinvention” of the 1979 sci-fi movie of the same name, and it will be directed by Oblivion director Joe Kosinski. The original followed a research vessel that finds a missing ship, commanded by a mysterious scientist, on the edge of a black hole. (Note: This is not the same as 2015’s The Black Hole, which starred Dean Cain).

Mass Effect

Release Date: TBA

The Division Movie

Release Date: TBA
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Jake Gyllenhaal

While obviously not originally a video game, calling the upcoming The Division movie anything but a video game movie would be wrong. Without Ubisoft’s The Division, there wouldn’t be a movie. It’s based on the works of Tom Clancy, and it follows the battle to take back NYC.

Bird Box

Release Date: TBA
Cast: Rosa Salazar, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson
Director: Susanne Bier

A post-apocalyptic movie that follows the story of a woman and a pair of children who are blindfolded and have to survive 20 miles of river using only their other senses. It’s based on the book of the same name by Josh Malerman, which released in 2015.

The return of the Riddick franchise.

Luna Park

Boss Level

An interesting concept of a sci-fi movie that sounds like Groundhog’s Day with a sci-fi twist. It follows a retired special forces officer who is trapped in an apparent never-ending time loop on the day of his death.

Upcoming Superhero Movies

The superhero genre is as popular as ever, and with the recent release of Logan — which many have called the best Wolverine movie to date — it’s clear that the genre isn’t going anywhere. The subgenre has a rabid fanbase, and the films have mass appeal, which means potential for box office domination. Here are all of the upcoming superhero movies that we know about right now, and we’ll update accordingly.

Black Panther

Release Date: February 16, 2018
Director: Ryan Coogler
Cast: Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira

The Flash

Release Date: March 16, 2018
Director: TBA
Cast: Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Kiersey Clemons, Billy Crudup

Avengers: Infinity War Part I

Release Date: May 4, 2018
Director: Joe and Anthony Russo
Cast: TBA

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Release Date: July 6, 2018
Director: Peyton Reed

Aquaman

Release Date: October 5, 2018 Delayed to December 21, 2018
Director: James Wan
Cast: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe

While it’s clear that Aquaman isn’t formidable enough for his own video game, he does appear to be able to support his own movie — at least, there seems to be enough buzz around the film. The casting of Jason Momoa for the leading role was a brilliant move for DC, and that’s definitely going to help the film see some success at the box office. Here’s to hoping by the time it releases in December of next year we haven’t already drowned in crappy DC movies.

*Update 4/13/17: We just learned that action movie star Dolph Lungdren has been added to the cast.

Captain Marvel

Green Lantern Corps

Release Date: June 19, 2020

Cast: TBD

Gambit

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

Inhumans

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

Justice League Dark

Release Date: TBA
Director: Doug Liman
Cast: TBD

The Batman

Release Date: Likely 2019
Director: Who knows at this point.
Cast: Ben Affleck, Joe Manganiello, J.K. Simmons, Jeremy Irons

The Batman is certainly going through the early stages of development hell right now. First, Ben Affleck dropped out as director, then there were rumors of him wanting to drop out as Batman entirely, then Matt Reeves was director, wasn’t director, and then became director again. The latest? The Batman is going through an entire rewrite from scratch, meaning Reeves won’t be getting someone’s sloppy seconds.

We’re certainly okay with Warner Bros. taking their time this time around, so here’s to hoping that The Batman turns out great. For now, just know that it’s one of the most anticipated superhero movies of 2019.

Nightwing

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

All we have at this point for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie is that it has been officially confirmed by director James Gunn. We assume he’s going to take the reins for it as well, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Still, know that Guardians 3 is on the way at some point in the future.

Suicide Squad 2

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

The only thing we know about the Suicide Squad sequel at this point is that it’s on the way, and that Adam Cozad will write it.

Somehow, someway, Suicide Squad 2 is happening. Here’s to hoping it’s a bit better than the original.
