ALBANY – U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is backing Gov. Cuomo in his primary race against actress Cynthia Nixon, the Daily News has learned.

Some insiders had wondered if she might back Nixon, given that Gillibrand through her Off the Sidelines political action committee has raised $6.5 million to help women candidates across the country.

But the state’s junior senator also has a long-standing relationship with Cuomo, having worked with him when he was federal housing secretary in the Bill Clinton administration.

“Kirsten is a friend of Governor Cuomo’s and supports his campaign,” Gillibrand spokesman Glen Caplin. “He’s been a leader on issues she cares deeply about like marriage equality, paid family leave and campus sexual assault to name a few.

“She believes he deserves to be re-elected.”

Nixon, an actor and activist, announced Monday she will challenge Cuomo in the September Democratic primary from the left. Cuomo is seeking a third term.

Cynthia Nixon runs for Governor of New York

Gillibrand, a Democrat who entered the Senate in 2009 after Hillary Clinton resigned to join the Obama administration, is running for a second full six-year term in November.

Like Cuomo, she has been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2020. Gillibrand has insisted she will serve a full term if re-elected to the Senate.

Gillibrand endorsed an insurgent woman candidate, Marie Newman, in her Illinois primary Tuesday night against 12-year incumbent conservative Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski.
